If you go away

If you go away
For quite a while
You’ll be surprised
When you return.

The small things
The smells
The trinkets
Those memories

You’d lost
Maybe purposefully
Maybe not
But they are there

And they welcome you
As if
They had sat there dormant
But breathing

About The Poet

John H Davies was born in 1962. After Uppingham and Sandhurst he served as an Infantryman in the British Army, and later as a mercenary in Central America, where he was detained in solitary confinement for a year as a prisoner of war. Since returning to the UK he worked in the manufacturing industry for 20 years, before joining a security company in East Africa. His portfolio included Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Zambia and D R Congo. After 4 years in north eastern Serengeti (Tanzania) working for a tourism and conservation organization, John was persuaded to jump back into the fire and start a security company in South Sudan. The poetry is influenced by early events, and subsequent adjustment to the day to day life of work, family and relationships. The poem 'Chinese Whispers' appeared in The Spectator, and Shropshire Life magazine published a monthly piece for a year selected from the blog. John can be contacted mwambani@hotmail.com
